Team Spotlight for September - Caroline Dutkanych, Interim Executive Director

1. ) How long have you been at Prevail and what is your position?

I joined Prevail as the Interim Executive Director on August 30, 2021.  I will be working to support staff leadership and the Prevail Board of Directors during the period of transition as the organization searches for a new Executive Director.  While my tenure at Prevail will be temporary, I already know in the brief period of time I've been here that I will be a supporter and appreciator of Prevail forever!

2. ) What do you like most about working for Prevail?

I have been impressed by the culture of support and teamwork among the staff here at Prevail, where the team lifts each other up and extends the same level of empathy, respect and authenticity to each other as they do to each and every one of their clients. This is an incredibly high functioning group of women doing difficult work with skill, bravery and care, and I feel privileged to be part of their efforts!

3. ) Who is your hero?

My dad is my hero.  He is a person who led by example.  He did not have to tell me how to be a good person - he showed me.  He was that person of whom everyone says, "he's the one person I feel like really, truly listens to me." I'm so lucky to have him as my dad!

4.)  What is your favorite quote?

My favorite quote is from Madeleine Albright, the first women to be Secretary of State for the United States of America:  "There is a special place in hell for women who don't help other women."  Prevail is an excellent example of the power of women helping other women, as domestic violence and sexual assault disproporationately impact women. I'm honored to be part of the organization's efforts.

5. ) What would you sing at Karaoke night?

"Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler.  So much drama!

6. )  What motivates you the most to serve others?

Service to others is a family tradition for me. My parents were both highly engaged in a wide variety of volunteer roles when I was growing up, and I learned by example.  I am also someone who considers myself a "people person."  I genuinely love to connect, I love to listen and I love to help.

7. ) If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

So hard to choose!  I love the eggplant parmesan my mother-in-law makes; she is an incredible cook.  Add a caprese salad and some warm, crusty Italian bread spread generously with real butter, and I'm in heaven!

8. ) What is your proudest accomplishment?

This is easy - my kids!  I am the proud mother of four boys, who are the joy of my life along with my wonderful husband. I am proud of my role as a parent, which is incredibly challenging, rewarding and fun.

9. ) What animal do you most identify with, and why?

A brown bear!  I love to sleep, and winter hibernation appeals to me.  In fact, almost every morning I feel like a (reluctant) bear trying to emerge from hibernation - I always want a few more minutes!  I am typically pretty laid back, but I can be ferocious like a bear when necessary.

10.) Favorite Prevail memory?

Too soon to tell!

11. ) Favorite self-care practice?

Yoga pants!  As soon as I get home from work, I transition from my professional clothes to comfy, stretchy yoga pants.  I probably have ten nearly identical pairs.  The act of changing helps me transition from my professional self into my family/friend self. Ah, I can breathe easily!
